e_topia.jpg“Urban Life, Jim–But Not As We Know It”
William J. Mitchell

The global digital network is a whole new urban infrastructure–one that will change the forms of our cities as dramatically as railroads, highways, electric power grids, and telephone networks did in the past. In this lucid, invigorating book, William Mitchell examines this new infrastructure and its implications for our future daily lives. He argues that we must extend the definitions of architecture and urban design to encompass virtual places as well as physical ones, and proposes strategies for the creation of cities that not only will be sustainable but will make economic, social, and cultural sense in an electronically interconnected and global world.

William J. Mitchell is the Alexander W. Dreyfoos Professor of Architecture and Media Arts and Sciences and directs the Smart Cities research group at MIT’s Media Lab. He was formerly Dean of the School of Architecture and Head of the Program in Media Arts and Sciences at MIT.

TeRK

without comments

terk.jpgIn order to make robotics more accessible the TeRK web site provides “recipes” or instructions for some simple robots. All of the recipes can be built with off-the-shelf parts. Once you choose and build a recipe, you can turn the robot on and it will automatically search for a wireless network and connect to the Internet. You can then drive the robot around from any computer with a web browser and Internet connection. You can control your robot from anywhere, even when you and the robot are not in the same place. The TeRK web site provides free software for use with the TeRK robots, and all of our software is open-source so you can modify it or write your own programs to control your robot as well.
